PCB Assembly Process and Technology
01. Surface Mount Technology Assembly Process
Apply solder paste; components are placed in PCBs. This PCB assembly technology is termed Surface Mount technology. It has small components as compared to Through-hole Technology.
The SMT PCB assembly process is as follows:
Step 1 – Apply Solder Paste to the pads of the PCB
Stencil is an indispensable tool for solder paste printing. Surface mount devices are placed on the PCB board after applying solder. Solder paste inspection will be applied to this stage.
Step 2 – Components placement
Once the solder paste has been applied to the circuit board, the board is ready for component soldering. The pick and place process of SMD is automated.
Step 3 – Reflow Soldering
The solder paste and components have been placed on the circuit board now, and then the next step is the reflow soldering process.
Step 4 – Assembly Inspection
To ensure the quality of surface mounting, we will apply the following inspection methods:
- Manual Visual inspection
- Automatic Optical Inspection
- X-ray Inspection
- First Article Inspection
Step 5 – Functionality Testing
After the PCB successfully passes the inspection phase, it goes through the functionality testing stage. This is to ensure that the PCB performs the required functions.
02. Through-hole Technology Assembly Process
The through-hole components are placed on one side of the PCB board and soldered on the other; they are soldered using wave soldering or hand soldering.
THT assembly process step is as follows:
Step 1 – Components Placements
The components are placed on the PCB board with pins passing through the via holes. The components placement can be either manual or automatic machine.
Step 2 – Soldering
The through-hole components soldering can be either manual or wave soldering.
Wave soldering is done at a high temperature.
Step 3 – Inspection and Functionality testing
The through-hole PCB is also inspected to find potential assembly flaws and later tested to check its functionality, like SMT assembly.
03. Mixed Technology PCB Assembly Process
Sometimes, Through-hole and Surface mount technology will be used simultaneously.
Single side mixed
All these procedures, such as applying solder paste, components Placement, Reflow soldering, Placement via Through-hole parts, and Wave soldering, respectively, are mandatory.

Double side mixed
In this case, PCB assembly can be processed either with adhesive or without adhesive. Surface mount adhesive is the optional step. All the steps of the single side and among the two sides are used. For non-adhesive, you have to skip the step SMT adhesive step.

If all components can be sourced from our local market, the parts will be ready within 7-14 days; if some parts have to be ordered from Mouser/Digikey, the preparation of parts will take 10-21 days, but the final preparing time will depend on when the last part is in place. We will assemble your order within 8-48 hours if all necessary files and the parts are ready.
We support partial turnkey assembly services. You can provide some or all components to speed up the delivery time.
After you request the quote, our sales manager will send you a detailed quotation sheet within 24 hours, which includes: PCB manufacturing cost, SMT stencil cost, assembly cost, parts cost(exact cost for each component), testing cost, and shipping cost, all costs will be listed in the quotation sheet, no other hidden costs.
Billing of materials (BOM) shows what components are needed to assemble the PCBs and where these components should be placed and assembled. We accept the BOM in the format of .xls, .xlsx, or .csv. A clear BOM can avoid many possible mistakes during component sourcing and assembly.
PCB Panelization will be useful for assembly and testing so that we will panelize your PCBs acquiescently; the SMT stencil will match the panelized PCB.

An SMT stencil is used for the SMD components soldering; with the stencil, the SMD components would be easy to solder. Please note that it won’t be shipped with the assembled PCB boards without extra requirements.
A coordinate file is necessary for Pick and Place machine; it describes the position and orientation of all the surface mount components, which includes the reference designator, X and Y position, rotation, and side of the Board (Top or Bottom).
Proper SMT machine setup and operation requires parts overages; resistors, Capacitors, and Diodes must exceed the required quantity by 20 pieces.
A small number of excess (1-5 pieces based on the total quantity of assemblies) is requested for expensive parts such as IC, BGA, QFP, Connectors, etc.; this will ensure smooth assembling and punctual shipping of your PCB assembly project.
